![]() The ActiveHybrid 7 came first, augmenting the twin-turbo V-8 engine from the 750i with an electric motor for power and performance rivaling the V-12 760Li, only with better fuel economy. ![]() Turns out the car itself was pretty useless for Audi, too, as it had some of the worst SUV sales in recent memory.- Tony Markovichīefore its electrified i sub-brand came into being, BMW entered the hybrid space with ActiveHybrid versions of several models, including its three core sedans, the 3-, 5-, and 7-series. ![]() The EV mode was essentially useless, however, with Audi claiming it could go only 1.8 miles at 37 mph. Audi claims the system could briefly work together for 241 horses and 354 lb-ft, or the car could run purely on gasoline or purely on electricity stored in a 1.3-kWh battery. Billed to get 26 mpg on the EPA’s combined scale, it paired a 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine that produced 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with an electric motor that made 44 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. It made its debut in 2013 as Audi’s first production hybrid model but was quickly shut down after the 2016 model year. Is a car more forgotten if it’s old and out of mind or if it’s relatively new but was so unmemorable that people didn’t know about it? The Audi Q5 hybrid makes the case for the latter, as it’s a newish car, and we’re sure there are still a few sitting around on dealer lots somewhere. Starting around the dawn of this century with the introduction of the Honda Insight and the Prius-and not counting historical milestones such as the 1900 Lohner-Porsche and the 1917 Woods Dual Power or obscure prototypes and concepts that teased the idea of a hybrid powertrain-here are some of the forgotten cars from the modern hybrid era: Some were legitimate forays-and fumbles-into an emerging market niche, while others only ever existed to appease regulators. While a number of other non-Toyota-badged hybrids have sold in serious numbers-for example, the Ford Escape hybrid and the Chevrolet Volt-there’s an electrified graveyard full of hybrids that, whether ill conceived, poorly marketed, or underperforming, vanished from our collective consciousness before their new-car smells even wore off. No other model has come close to its more than 2.2 million cumulative sales in the United States, and for many years its fuel economy reigned supreme. The Toyota Prius is often thought of as the hybrid.
